Imposter Syndrome - 6 alternative questions instead of questioning your abilities

What if you’re questioning the wrong thing?

What if it’s not you but it’s the job or the environment that’s the problem.

Many of my clients come to me experiencing Imposter Syndrome and they’re questioning whether they’re capable of doing their job but as we work together they start to recognise that it’s in fact their job or environment that’s the issue not them!

in 2010 I was working as a HR Manager and I dreaded going to work each day. I just had this feeling that I was failing and I wasn’t up to the job. I would be filled with anxiety and I wanted to leave the job but I didn’t feel like I could find another job as who would want someone as rubbish as me! I felt like I was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

After being sick of being stuck, I googled careers advice and stumbled across a life coach in Leeds where I was living at the time. What I found out from working with her was that I was doubting the wrong thing!! Through the work we did together, I discovered it was the job and the environment that I was working in was the problem.

So if you’re feeling stuck and you’re doubting your ability to do your job, ask yourself these 6 questions instead:

  1. Is this the right environment for me?

Maybe it’s time to reflect and see if you like the company and do their values match with your own

  2. Is this the right role for me?

Whilst you want some scope for growth in your role, does it match your skill set?

  3. Am I getting the right support?

We all need support in different ways but it’s great to know someone has got your back

  4. Am I getting the right development?

It’s ok being asked to grow and develop but are you getting the right development fo fulfil your role

  5. Do I know what it expected of me?

If you don’t know what’s expected of you how do you know if you’re doing well or focusing on the right things

  6. Does it fit my personality type?

We all have an ideal environment according to our personality type and being in the wrong one can affect out motivation and confidence levels

If you answered no to any of these questions, then maybe it’s time to question your job instead of you.
